KIIT Celebrating the colors of our beautiful relationship

I am dreaming of playing with colors and gulal,
It is the Holi celebration after all.
I can't play inside my home, the carpets will get tainted,
I cant' play it in the yard, the grass and outer walls will get painted.
I thought I would go to the temple,
and enjoy the traditional Holi festivities,
The trees smile with their sprout
of tender leaves and blooming flowers,
Eternal nature with its transient expression.
Hails spring with ecstasy and joy!
Bewildering shades with so many tinge.
The land of beauty and greatness,
India, witnessing color of happiness and peace.
Nation come alive to enjoy the spirit
A celebration of color- Holi!
An experience of content, harmony and delight.

So Called Engineering Buddy

If you are an engineering student you may relate  it and if not,  I hope you will enjoy reading.
So i finally came to an engineering college, a partial dream come true after 2 years of slogging (+1 for me). What had brought me here,
What i immediately noticed after coming to college was that students were here from different parts of the country having constantly very good ranks in their respective schools but what i also noticed was that  like me most of my colleges had very less interest in electrical or mechanical stuff. What we had learnt in higher secondary level was basically done to secure good marks . We hardly knew our attitude would remain with us throughout. Engineering really means playing with or dismantling different types of things around for the ease of humans, but very few among hundreds had that knack.  But whatever happened we have ended up in an engineering college for “four” unforgettable years of our life .
Students were now getting computers and laptops , we had internet connection in each room to stay updated about the latest technologies but  we were using them  to stay  connected to  friends through various social networking sites. Before we knew our exams were knocking the door, we always had this urge to laugh at people who used to study regularly and call them book worms but just before the exam we realize we were wrong, and the most important thing  is that this realization remained only till the exam time. Thus most of the students who were ex-toppers were seen slogging before exam and praying just to clear exams.
We enjoy all other time in our college except the weeks in which exams are held and we seriously do. Staying away from guardians does provide a lot of freedom.
would like to end it by making every engineering students remember something…..
till class 10 : ” study till boards after that you can do whatever you want.”
class11-12: “its only 2 years more after that it like picnic in the college, believe me its true!!!
after entering into an engineering college and getting average G.P.A. : “you were not like this, what happened to you,  study hard to get placements if you want to live a happy life”
After almost 2 years , i am still not able to reply  to questions which  ask me what engineering is all about, or what have i learnt till now,Good or Bad i don’t know but we are enjoying each and every moment here , and i suppose that is the most important thing, future will ultimately take its own course of action…..

10 Ways To Become The Greatest Engineer

If you look at our list of the Top 10 most remarkable engineers, you will notice some similarities.  Outside, the obvious drive and ambition, these remarkable engineers also possessed an unwavering desire and a passion for engineering.  It is what explains Edison’s  attitude after  1,000 failures, or Ford’s belief in his idea while everyone around him was content with horse-driven carriages. What makes a great engineer is not just having a deeper understanding of a particular subject matter but also vision, drive and a create-the-best-the-world-has-ever-seen type of an attitude.  Unfortunately, these attributes are not learned in school and can only be effectively harnessed by years of dedication and perseverance. Mastering these attributes and applying them to an idea or a project is what makes one a great engineer.

So, how would you know that you have become a great engineer. Simply use this as your guide and approach to everything that you do.

   1)  Settle for nothing less than outstanding work. Every time.
    2) Learn from the best and strive to be better than them.  Making mistakes is allowed, however, learning  from others’ errors is much better.
    3) Determine what you are passionate about and then do exactly that.
    4) Stay viable and current in your field.
    5) Take risks and always think outside the box.
    6) Project your ideas and ambitions 5,10,20 years out and then plan how to get there.
    7) Align yourself with people who will support your vision and ambition.
    8) Find your flaws—and fix them.
   9) Give back to your community.
    10) Show up every time.

Education should not be a business product: Abdul Kalam

Opposing the commercialization of education, former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam today said it should not be made into a business, but imparted by good teachers.

"Education cannot be a business product or system. Education at the primary level has to be delivered in an integrated way by great teachers through good syllabus and promoting affinity between parents, students and teachers," Kalam said.

"It is not a great building or a great facility or great advertisements which gives quality, but lovable education and great teachers do," Kalam told at an interactive session with students and teachers of National High School at its centenary celebration.

Kalam gave the example of how his own school days were happy in the thatched Rameswaram Panchayat Primary School despite poor infrastructure and scanty amenities.

He said his teachers, who had a mission to spread education, were loved by students and there was no dropout.

Having graced the post of the President of India besides working as an administrator and scientist, the 'Missile Man' said he loved teaching the most.

"I have been a teacher, a scientist and an administrator. Now I have come to teaching again. If you ask me what I love the most, I would say it is teaching," said the 81-year-old who travels regularly all over India to meet students.

He began his speech on 'I am born with wings' by asking students what they would be carrying with them after passing out from school.

When the students replied that it was knowledge, Kalam redefined it.
"Knowledge is creativity plus righteousness in the heart plus courage."

Presenting his vision of India in the next few years, he said, "We want a nation where crimes against women and children are absent and none in society feels alienated".

He also stressed on the need to have a nation where education with value system was not denied to any meritorious candidate because of societal or economic discrimination.

"A nation where the rural and urban divide has reduced to a thin line. A nation where there is an equitable distribution and adequate access to energy and quality water," Kalam said, adding, he wanted that governance should be responsive, transparent and corruption-free.

ISTE Workshop IIT Bombay

Every Indian learner deserves to be given a chance to have the highest quality education. Scarcity of trained teachers critically hinders this national desire. This project envisions empowerment of teachers, through workshops conducted for thousands of teachers at on go, using a unique blend of technology and an innovative pedagogy. Thousands have experienced the effectiveness of this approach, and of the resulting open source contents.

New technologies and tools are developed to further enhance the educational experience. Application development and content porting to Aakash tablet is being ramped up.

Work is done in synergetic collaboration with sister projects at IIT Bombay, such as eLearning Animation, Spoken tutorials, Virtual labs, and FOSSEE(Free and Open-source Software for Scientists and Engineers and the remarkable achievements).

Lecture on Astronomy

Astronomy is a natural science that deals with the study of celestial objects (such as moons, planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies); the physics, chemistry, and evolution of such objects; and phenomena that originate outside the atmosphere of Earth (such as supernovae explosions, gamma ray bursts, and cosmic background radiation). A related but distinct subject, cosmology, is concerned with studying the universe as a whole.

In early times, astronomy only comprised the observation and predictions of the motions of objects visible to the naked eye. In some locations, such as Stonehenge, early cultures assembled massive artifacts that possibly had some astronomical purpose. In addition to their ceremonial uses, these observatories could be employed to determine the seasons, an important factor in knowing when to plant crops, as well as in understanding the length of the year.

Before tools such as the telescope were invented, early study of the stars had to be conducted from the only vantage points available, namely tall buildings and high ground using the naked eye. As civilizations developed, most notably in Mesopotamia, China, Egypt, Greece, India, and Central America, astronomical observatories were assembled, and ideas on the nature of the universe began to be explored. Most of early astronomy actually consisted of mapping the positions of the stars and planets, a science now referred to as astrometry. From these observations, early ideas about the motions of the planets were formed, and the nature of the Sun, Moon and the Earth in the universe were explored philosophically. The Earth was believed to be the center of the universe with the Sun, the Moon and the stars rotating around it. This is known as the geocentric model of the universe, or the Ptolemaic system, named after Ptolemy.

Lean in Academia

Lean in Academia by Ms. Shelly Gupta & Ms. Jyoti Yadav
Date: 10-12-2011
Topic: - Lean in Academia
Presenter: - Ms. Shelly Gupta & Ms. Jyoti Yadav
Department: - Engineering
Detail:-
The methodology of Lean Software Development is the application of lean manufacturing principles when developing software.Bob Charette, the originator, writes that the measurable goal of Lean development is to build software with one-third the human effort, one-third the development hour and one-third the investment as compared to software being developed using other methodologies.

The Presenters conducted surveys to find out the problems faced by students in developing their projects and how these can be solved by using a methodology already implemented in Software Industries. They introduced a tool called Kanban board which can be used by the students and the faculty to implement the projects successfully.
The conclusions were:

1. Generally, the students lack knowledge of new technologies or methodologies been used successfully in the market. They should be trained as a part of their curriculum on such advancements.

 2. Project team members are not flexible as often it is difficult to make them co-operate and work as teams. However, practicing Agile development empowers the team members to take all decisions themselves, which teaches them to co-operate even against their will.

3. Young developers should be exposed to new and latest technology which provides them a glimpse of the real world scenario.
